Someday, some way

I put a comment in at yuletide 's Someday My Fic Will Come challenge (there's only three of us! It seems like there used to be lots of people who did this!), where if you've asked for a fandom for at least three times but never received it, you can leave your prompts to see if anyone will write it for you. Like, I know the odds of me ever getting The Adjustment Bureau fic are infinitesimally low, but it's one of those perfect challenges for people like me who cling to a few fandoms we ask for over and over. :-D

This has been the biggest problem for me and a few other people I know: the pool of things I'm interested in that qualify for Yuletide gets smaller and smaller every year, and so much of what is eligible doesn't interest me enough to be able to write a story or want to get one. (I wish more and more that ffnet wasn't part of this--I feel like if the challenge is on AO3, then that should be where the fic count lives. I know no one at this point who even goes to ffnet, and I keep wishing it would just fade away as part of the challenge. There are enticing fandoms that are still under 1k on AO3 if it were the sole eligibility site!) ANYhow, more people should comment on Someday My Fic Will Come so I have some more potential prompts to look for.

Yesterday a moving truck came and took all my new neighbor's stuff away. She hasn't even lived there for two years, and when she moved in, she started doing all this stuff with the front of the house, turning half of the front yard into a garden, building a front patio and pergola... And she was quiet and the same age as me, and it was really nice to finally be able to relax a little about the person who lived less than six feet from my bedroom window. So now I'm in this spiral of anxiety because I just do not know what will happen--I have had some unbelievably shitty or dangerous neighbors and that house just seems to be a revolving door--when I first moved in, it was being sublet by subletters (drug dealers) who then sublet it again (illegal grow operation), then when the landlord finally sold it, a nice young couple bought it. They lived there for quite a while, but since then, I've had like five neighbors within ten years, and I thought things had finally settled down. I don't know why she moved, she never said anything to me, though I know she'd been in treatment for breast cancer--I'd thought since she got both a puppy and a kitten fairly recently things were going well, but I don't know; I hope she's okay. If you know anyone nice who's looking for a cute lil house in Seattle, let me know!

I know the odds of me ever getting The Adjustment Bureau fic are infinitesimally low - I actually signed up for that one few Yuletides ago, but we quite obviously did not get matched on it. XD

I have actually read fic on ff.net in the recent past, i.e. last year, because it was recced. I don't read there regularly anymore, but every now and then it has good fic that's not on the AO3.

I hear you on the neighbor anxiety. Some people bought the house across the alley for us and they have not been good neighbors so far. We know they are looking to build rentals on the lot (it's a key lot, so it's big) and that would be really bad. Fortunately, they would need neighbor approval to get the property zoning changed and I don't know anyone on our block who would be ok with that.

With the cost of housing in Seattle I would think there would be a line of people for it!

SERIOUSLY, re ff.net....and I wish there could somehow be an "old fandoms" clause, for fandoms 10 or even 20 years old, maybe, because they're dead and not megafandoms but don't qualify for small fandom stuff either. There were fic archives but those are mostly gone. Like, Babylon 5 is barely over the limit, if you filter by complete fics in English over 1K.....AND crossovers.

I know it will never ever happen and all of fandom is fine with it, but I really wish YT would just exclude crossovers. And mundane AUs.

Good luck on new neighbors! I wish I could offer you some good replacements, but all the people I know looking for housing in the Seattle area are families of 4+ people, so a small house wouldn't do. As it is, I'm in the same boat; our friendly neighbors moved out and have a sale pending sign on their house, so I'm nervous about who is coming in.

It does seem ridiculous that Yuletide hasn't updated its criteria. I avoid FF.net, even for recs, because Nope.

I used to post every year at the "someday my fic will come" page (for Zenna Henderson's People stories), but then someone wrote two lovely stories in that fandom for me. So now even though I'd love to see more some year, "someday" has arrived.

I'm currently reading a Harry Potter story on FF.net. I think it's pretty active for that still. But for newer fandoms, definitely not.

I hope you get some good neighbors that stay put for a while.
