Gah! And feh, bah, and a bleh, too! MDs last night just made me want to tear my hair out. I think I'm about 1 of 100 people in America actually watching this show, and certainly the only fan I know of watching it. And it tortures me with its potential.
I always say I'm bifanual -- I have no preference for slash or straight fandoms, and have equal amounts of either in my fannish history. But this is the first show since Magnificent 7 where I've found a slash quality I liked, because I really enjoy having slightly older, more mature guys being slashy and there's a dearth of that on TV right now.
Last night had hardly any interaction between Kellerman (William Fichtner) and... uh... I can't even begin to know how to spell John Hannah's character's name, so I'll just leave it at Hannah, until the end, and it was the kind of thing that would show up over and over as a pivotal clip in a slash vid, if anyone made them for this (of course, you'd have to watch it, which no one is). The cheesebal plot involves a prisoner coming to "the Mish" -- Mission General Hospital -- and of course he needs a new heart so Nice Guy Transplant Patient gets pushed back on the list by Kellerman, and everyone hates him for it, and he hates himself for following the protocols. Hannah tells him that professionally he did the right thing, but personally, it's indefensible. Then he leaves poor Kellerman alone and sad. It reminded me of the most popular scene used in Pros vids -- Bodie storming at Doyle in The Rack, nice and angsty and slashy. Vidders kill for this kind of scene.
And then at the end, as Kellerman's leaving on his Harley (of course he rides a Harley, he's a doctor who cares! And he's a rebel! And he'll never be any good!), he gets pulled back for surgery, but then it doesn't work out, and Hannah catches him on the way in to perform his own surgery, and offers to let Kellerman help him (even though of course Hannah doesn't need help) and they give each other That Look over the sliced up patient underneath them, and smile sweetly at each other, and all's well in the slash universe. Come on, you know That Look -- the one slash fans have seen for years in subtext, that created many a pairing, the one that says "we're meant to be together", the one that's set so many slashy hearts to fluttering.
They had That Look! And I love both the guys! And the show is just. so. crappy. It'll be a mercy killing when they cancel it, I suppose. But I'll still be heartbroken over losing this pair. Please get them another show together, stat.

Date: 2002-10-24 10:31 am (UTC)I'm probably the 2nd out of 100 people in America who actually watch "MDs" and last night I made the crucial mistake of going to bed instead of watching! (I was just so heartbroken that poor Latina!Gina died and we weren't given any hot Dr.Maggie/Kellerman/Dalgety threesome hijinks the week before...)
I know they're nailing the lid shut on the show's coffin and there ain't no crash cart in the world that can help revive it, but you're right, the delicious slashy partnership between William Fichtner and John Hannah is going to be sorely missed.
From the moment Kellerman and Dalgety met officially at the end of the premiere, I knew it was magic. And then, when they began the episode a few weeks back in the shower TOGETHER...it wasn't even subtext, it was text! They manage to combine that gorgeous angst-ridden tension with this sparkling sense of mischievous cameraderie...which gets more and more apparent every week.
Guh. If you have tapes and can convince a vidder to set these boys to music, do it. I'm thinking "Dr.Feelgood" or "Bad Medicine", lol.
If I were a savvy television exec, I would snatch up these boys and move them to a new show because that is chemistry that should NOT be wasted.

Date: 2002-10-24 11:14 am (UTC)Last night was mostly Kellerman on his own and Dalgety (thank you a thousand times for telling me how to spell it) on his own with the Naive Caring Intern, engaging in medical hijinx, but they did have those two crucial scenes together, and they were lovely. ABC's still advertising "next week on an all-new MDs", but I'm not hopeful how long it'll last.
And I love your icon -- I'm graphically challenged, and I just love all the cool icons I see in LJ pages. It's wonderful!

Date: 2002-10-24 11:19 am (UTC)I pretty much had to break down and make "MDs" icons right after the second episode...and even THEN I knew it wasn't going to last.
I didn't know how to spell Dalgety's name until I perused the official ABC site.
I can't help myself with this show. It IS slashy and despite the general crappiness of medical dramas, it has snappy dialogue and other characters that I find amusing as well. I just wish more people tuned in to it. Even "Chicago Hope" got to run for a few years. All I'm asking for "MDs" is one complete season of a show with a diverse cast and boy doctors in luuurve.

Date: 2002-10-24 11:32 am (UTC)I wasn't especially super-impressed with last night's episode, but I could see what you like about the show. I managed to miss the bits of interaction between Delgaty and Kellerman except at the very end ::kicks self:: but I saw "The Look" to which you're referring and, yeah. Slash, baby.
I also loved the meeting where the Cardiac Team (rah, rah, go team!) was debating who would receive the first available heart. I really felt Kellerman's dilemma, and appreciated the insights into the (new to me) characters. I want to learn more about everyone around that table.
In other words, you can count me Viewer #3, even though I'm a newbie to the show. :)

Told you I was a newbie.

Date: 2002-10-24 01:24 pm (UTC)gwyn...since I noticed your lack of icon-age, I did a quick search for MDs stills and manipulated Dalgety a little closer to his man. It's probably a little shabby since I did it in ten minutes, but feel free to use it...
