Screw edutainment!
Feb. 18th, 2004 09:59 pmHow on earth can you even review, in a normal reviewing fashion, this episode?
I mean, how can you possibly intellectualize something this fucking hysterical? I can't even remember laughing this hard at an episode of Jossverse shows, ever, and that includes the comic genius of Something Blue, Bewtiched, Bothered and Bewildered, The Zeppo, and Tabula Rasa. My throat is raw and sore from howling with laughter. This was like a lesson in comedic scriptwriting from start to finish, with the sweet little dips and swirls of romances tentative and broken adding to the perfect screwball feel of everything else. (And I won't get all shallow about Wes in the turtleneck, but... phwoar.)
I want a wee little puppet Angel of my very own. I thought I would die during the fight with Spike, especially the elevator doors opening and Spike in a heap, and Puppet Angel adjusting his clothes. Then I thought I would die again when he became Vampire Puppet Angel during the fight. I loved the tweaks on everything in the Angelverse, all the characteristics of him and his relationships to others. This was like a reward for long-time viewers, a way to laugh with this character and this show in a totally unique way. And the editing was superb, really making it seem like Angel as a puppet was moving and walking and fighting. They did an astounding job. But that's really all you can say that's analytical and whatever, because... it was just fucking hysterical.
I don't know how on earth Amy, J, and Alexis kept a straight face during the power walk with Puppet Angel. How many times did they film that, I wonder? I would have died. And the scene where Wes yells at Angel and he gets pouty that Wes is yelling at him... oh, man, did that hit all my buttons. Joss and Ben rule my world tonight. And poor Gunn! What terrible thing has he traded off for this change? I can totally understand his desperation to stay with what he is now, to be more than he thought he could be... but what's the price? (God, how can they take this show away? There's SO much left to tell!) And that preview for next week -- aiiieeee! (And all my S/A slash friend must be beside themselves over that one clip. What a wonderful treat for you guys!) And Knox! Knox with a broken heart -- oh, I wonder what he'll do now that he's hurt...
I'm going off to the con tomorrow with a very sad and yet strangely happy heart, because this was the funnest, funniest bit of TV I've seen in ages. It reminds me a little of how I felt after seeing Objects in Space -- it had just been confirmed that Firefly was cancelled for sure, and then there came this sublime, perfect piece of TV. Now I'm filled with despair that a group of people who could provide an hour like Smile Time won't be giving me any more of this... ever. Arg. How could a company that comes up with lines like "I'm writing a song about the difference between analogy and metaphor" not be allowed to keep producing such brilliant, original, sharp, and delightful work? We all need self-esteem, people!

Hey, maybe the merchandising income...
