So, you know how I was saying that I have major issues with the whole Kate storyline in White Collar? (OK, most of you probably don't, but I have been grousing about this since the beginning.) One of my biggest issues is that the actress looks like she's about 15, so this long and storied romance Neal talks about has some holes in it.

Well, the new movie Percy Somethingorother and the Olympians is proof that she is, since she's playing a teenager in it. When I started seeing ads for it appear everywhere I was like "Vindication! She's 15!"

The actress is about 24 but it looks like she does play a lot of much younger women. If she's playing her real age in the series, she would have been a mere 20 when Neal went to prison, and it sounds like they were together for a long time before that. So, let's hope that she's playing older this time. I'd prefer not to think of Neal as a young twentysomething boffing a teenage girl.

(ETA: It's not the boffing a teenager thing that bothers me -- I was a teenage girl boffing a young twentysomething guy at one point in my life, so this statutory thing is kind of meaningless to me. It's just that I think it's not really very Nealish to be a young swinging con man having a relationship with a teenager like that. It seems rather far-fetched.)

If she's a street kid/grew up as a grifter, she would be (ahem) old beyond her years.

In fact, she'd been passing for over-21 for years when they first met, and he first realized she was starting to trust him when she finally admitted her age. (Which, later turned out to be a lie, but closer to the truth than the original date she'd given him, so he thought they were at least heading the right direction.)

I'm trying!!

OMG I was just about to email you:

Copperbadge just put up a HUGE White Collar pimping post. (http://copperbadge.livejournal.com/2954476.html) He lays the groundwork for all the reasons people should watch the show, and how it *defies* all the usual tv tropes.

2,700 people follow him.

I've actually dropped White Collar because, well, "my love for kate iz pastede on yay" got to me after awhile.

It's like they're so desperate for Neal to be heterosexual and ... frankly, unlike TF&TF where it's actually so obviously transferrance?

Yeah, anyway.

Yeah, I would love it if they just jettisoned the whole Kate storyline, especially since I think they've seen that it's really not working for the viewers all that much.

Interesting you should say that...

I also noticed Kate looks quite young, in her early 20s, but my own take is that Neal is that young too. So if they supposedly have been together for years, they could have met when they were both around 18 and are now 22-23, I do not see the problem?

Unless it's because the actor who plays Neal seems that much older to you, like in his early 30s?

To me, the character he plays is not yet 25. Which by the way is how I interpret what copperbadge describes as a D/s relationship with Peter: I see it more as a parent/kid relationship because the age gap between Neal and Peter is easily 15 years: I see Neal as being in his early 20s (possibly under 25, since he is supposed to be a kid genius/con artist) and Peter as being in his late 40s.

What do you think?

Even assuming Neal was in prison 4 years (I thought it was more like 3 years?) I thought the point was that HE was that young too... ie, no age difference with Kate.

Well, since Matt Bomer's in his early 30s, it's hard for me to even think of him as under 25 -- he doesn't look old at all, but he has a lot more maturity in his face than someone under 25 would. And 15 years between him and Peter? Nah. Not that much. I know there are people who are into that whole d/s thing, but I can't stand it, so I would never look at the relationship like that, or like a father son thing. Obvy other people's mileage varies.
